Mubarak walks like an Egyptian.
Mubarak said in one of his final speeches as President “I never wanted to become a dictator.” Is it even possible to become a dictator without wanting it? It’s not like tending bar, you don’t just fall into it. Really the essential requirement to becoming a dictator is wanting more than anyone around you. Just because you don’t declare it as a major in college or dress up as it on career day doesn’t mean that if asked “would you like the maximum amount of power and wealth your country can possibly give one person?” you’re not at least willing to give it a shot. C’mon Mubarak just say what you feel, “Holy shit I can’t believe I’m stepping down over a facebook page and some tweets. I never should have wasted my time on Friendster.”
Andy Rooney did another “here’s a bunch of sh*t collecting dust in my office” piece last week. This time it was old letters from friends which were flashed on screen too fast to read unless you paused. I paused. The two best were from Barbara Walters which reads (in drunken chicken scratch handwriting) “I never returned the diamonds, I have been living with them for years” and from Ted Kennedy “Water, yes- but thank god no pea soup.” I love you, Andy Rooney, you weird old coot.
In the 70’s, a San Francisco PBS affiliate contacted experimental visual and audio artists Henry Jacobs and Bob McClay to create a three part series dedicated to leisure, what resulted is simply overwhelming. If you ever have a chance to see a full episode of “The Fine Art of Goofing Off” do it. It’s like Sesame Street for adults. Inspiring, entertaining and poignant. Here’s just a small sample. Enjoy.
In the Society of T all races are welcome and all fools are pitied.
“ January 17th, 1992… Vinnie believed in curses. Phil believed he was pregnant. And I believed in being rational. (pause to think) I guess everyone has a few delusions. ”
